What to Do When You Don't Know Who You Are

The way society is set up, we're born, our mothers formula-fed us mostly because that option was available and convenient (no pun intended if you really tried to breastfeed, or whatever the hell your story is, really nobody cares...), you grow up, you go to school, you basically conform to the rules and school structure. You want something in the world, you learn that it all costs money. Your sole ambition becomes to grow up and be rich enough to buy all the things you want. You go to school with the impression that once you graduate and go to college that's when the fun really begins. Naturally you assumed that's where all the freedom lies, because you'll be out of your parents' house and be in love with who and what you're doing. You graduate college and you're ready to conquer the world, ready to get THE job. Sometimes you go through a string of jobs, and you're still not feeling fulfilled. That's the new norm. You settle for a job because of the benefits and you feel like you have time because you're like 23 and the next thing you know you're anywhere from 28-40 years old. Somehow everything became a matter of convenience, no longer purpose...

We've really lost the ability to dream, to use our imaginations, to think outside of the box because of the pressures of our current economic climate. If you've settled down, got married, or had a kid or two, your will is to survive. To pay your bills, put food on the table, and get through the daily pressures. It's not easy, and even though you'd like to just stop and do something differently you can't because that will to just survive overpowers any desire to take a leap of faith and think BIG or think outside of the box we've been confined to. That box we're confined to is called fear.

When I was a teenager I wasn't afraid of anything or anyone. I got a thrill out of doing risky things. As an adult, my actions were no longer as risky. I weigh all my decisions with caution. The riskiest thing I did up until last week was not get on the scale for 3 days. I''ve been on Pinterest looking at different things I wanna do around my home but I've always been so scared of painting and heights because I'm scared I'll screw up or that I won't be able to stand on the 3rd level of the ladder. Well last Friday, I grew. To you it's just painting, but to me it was believing in myself and taking a leap, a step outside of my convenient comfort zone. I took the risk and did it myself. Not only did I do a good job, but I gained an experience I wouldn't have if I waited for a man. I'll save us tons of money from our painter's fees, (although I will still use him for bigger projects; ie "don't bite off more than you can chew").


WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER.

You've been working over 40 hours a week, why the hell would you need to work harder? Find ways to re-invent the wheel. If you put your passion into your work, time flies when you're having fun. Sometimes you're driving somewhere and you see these people on the sidewalk holding up an arrow sign advertising a business inside a shopping plaza. There are those that are holding up the sign, or wearing the sign and they're just on their phone looking miserable as hell. Then there are the ones who have earphones on and are dancing, spinning the sign, just jamming out. They always make me smile, because what a great spirit they must have. We all know those sign holding jobs don't pay well and mostly target those in society who probably have something in their background check holding them back from progressing in life, but if I were building a team of people for my business, I'd want that enthusiastic person.

APPRECIATION

Be grateful for having this moment of confusion where you question who you are. Value yourself so much that you know what you can and cannot accept in life. Appreciate your experiences. Accept what you can't change, and change what you can't accept, but appreciate every step of the process, because in those steps you're learning who you are, and what you want. Those moments are like rough drafts of the final product that is you.

EXPERIENCES OVER MATERIALS

Seek out experiences. We gain experience through listening to stories, reading books, watching TV (to a degree), learning about things, enjoying nature, and the simple things. Do things you've never done before.

I'm all for feminism, and empowerment. I hope to inspire personal development, and motivate women to take better care of themselves. Not just your body but your mind, your soul, your spirit.

When the inside is taken cared of, everything on the outside falls into place.

Scientific Study Finds Eating Coconut Oil Daily Leads to Reduction in Waist Size

Researchers now know that weight loss associated with coconut oil is related to the length of the fatty acid chains contained in coconut oil. Coconut oil contains what are called medium chain fatty acids, or medium chain triglycerides (MCTs for short).

These medium chain fatty acids are different from the common longer chain fatty acids found in other plant-based oils. Most vegetable oils are composed of longer chain fatty acids, or triglycerides (LCTs). LCTs are typically stored in the body as fat, while MCTs are burned for energy. MCTs burn up quickly in the body.

Coconut oil is nature’s richest source of MCTs that increase metabolic rates and lead to weight loss. MCTs promote what is called thermogenesis. Thermogenesis increases the body’s metabolism, producing energy. Researchers in Japan have found that when you consume a food rich in MCTs such as coconut oil, the MCTs are absorbed and transported directly into the liver via the portal vein.

First, when MCTs are substituted for LCTs in the diet, the body is much less inclined to store fat. Second, when we eat sensibly, a diet containing MCTs is more effective than a low-fat diet at decreasing stored fat.


In a human study, researchers compared the metabolic effects of 400-calorie meals of MCTs and LCTs by measuring metabolic rates prior to and six hours following the test meals. The results showed that the MCT-containing meals caused an average 12 percent increase in basal metabolic rate as compared with a 4 percent increase with the LCT-containing meal. The authors concluded that replacing dietary fats with MCTs could “over long periods of time produce weight loss even in the absence of reduced [caloric] intake.”(study)

Coconut oil is nature’s richest source of MCTs. Not only do MCTs raise the body’s metabolism leading to weight loss, but they have special health-giving properties as well. The most predominant MCT in coconut oil, for example, is lauric acid. Lipid researcher Dr. Jon Kabara states “Never before in the history of man is it so important to emphasize the value of Lauric Oils. The medium-chain fats in coconut oil are similar to fats in mother’s milk and have similar nutriceutical effects. These health effects were recognized centuries ago in Ayurvedic medicine. Modern research has now found a common link between these two natural health products—-their fat or lipid content. Outside of a human mother’s breast milk, coconut oil is nature’s most abundant source of lauric acid and medium chain fatty acids.

So for those who continue to insist that there is no evidence that coconut oil leads to weight loss, we respectfully disagree!

When In Doubt Eat Lamb; 3 Ingredient Succulent BBQ Lamb Chops Recipe

Tonight I had the most awesome dinner! Omg it was like an orgasm but in your mouth! Whether it was the food and wine combo or just the lamb I won't ever know. If I was on death row and had to choose my last meal, this meal would've been chosen.

Lately article after article keeps coming out, scientifically speaking against the saturated fat myth that saturated fat is bad for you. Eating meat does raise your carbon footprint, so it's still ruining the planet. However just as red meat is no longer being considered the devil, chicken is being flagged recently for the industry's breeding processes. With overcrowded factory farms, chickens are flocked together in unsanitary conditions, ranging from feces to the remains of chicks/birds who died from diseases. Eating lamb has a higher carbon footprint than eating chicken, but due to all these recent accounts, it looks like it's healthier and more humane to go with lamb. 


Michelle's 3 Ingredient Succulent BBQ Lamb Chops Recipe 

-For 6 chops washed and drained well. It's 4 Ingredients if you count the lamb, but 3 sounds better =) 

Ingredients:


  • 1/3 of the Lawry's Signature Steakhouse Marinade bottle
  • 1-1.5 tablespoons Grill Mates Mesquite mixed into:
  • Approx 1-1.5 cup Sweet Baby Ray's Honey Chipotle BBQ Sauce

Steps:

1. Pour 1/3 of the bottle of marinade in lamb, make sure the chops are thoroughly saturated. Place in refrigerator overnight, or at least an hr covered. 
2. Place on the grill and let it cook evenly on both sides. Cook time depends on your BBQ grill temperatures. My husband usually grills it and said it's usually at around 400-450 degrees for 35 mins. Turn the chops over on each side every 3-4 mins to prevent it from browning and keep the grill closed to prevent it from drying and hardening. 
3. At the end during the last 5 minutes brush lamb on both sides generously with the sauce. 

I Highly Recommend  drinking the Malbec Red Wine with this Recipe!!!

This meal is always so good with my fave choice of greens: Arugula! Served with anything from yellow rice and beans, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and/or even sweet peas straight from the can, buy Organic of course. My husband's favorite pairing was the peas and mashed potatoes.  

I'm like the Ratatouille of food connoiseurs because I love the way things are paired. I can easily obsess over a meal like this; taking careful bites of meat, greens and potatoes and a sip of wine. I usually seek out a good Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon to go with a tomato based pasta or meat. I pretty much read the back and mix and match wines with foods, I absolutely hate having the same wine with everything. Right now everybody and their granny are riding Moscato so hard, (and those are most likely the same people who could eat a chicken stew and a turkey stew and not know which meat is which...[insert eye-rolling emoji here], but personally I'd prefer to have Moscato with seafood and pastas. It's like the perfect combination. 

A couple of things worth mentioning is: No I'm not a hypocrite, these ingredients aren't exactly health friendly or organic. There's corn syrup in one of em, and preservatives in another, sugar, etc. I always said I try my best to eat organic (remember the dirty dozen?) but will not go crazy if I can't do 100%. The best part of this meal is that the arugula is organic and the lamb is grass fed from Publix. A war was going on in my house, because my man likes to eat, and while the war on GMOs and chemicals hasn't' ended on my behalf, I do let things slide by like an 80/20 rule for the sake of a satisfied husband who's sick of the strict grocery guidelines and contingencies...Will I ever stop voting with my dollars? Highly unlikely, but like I said this is our special meal we share, and not an everyday thing, you gotta live that YOLO mentality sometimes.

The Garden of Marriage

There's a notion that the longer you've been in a relationship, the easier it gets. Logic would have you believe that you've already found all the compatibility loopholes, and that you've already established roots in each other's minds, hearts and souls. The longer you've been with someone the better you ought to know them. You know their likes, dislikes, and preferences. So what could possibly be so tough about marriage?

The heavy truth about marriage is that it takes a lot of hard work. By hard work, I mean non-stop communication, keen self-awareness in both parties, and devotion. If I have to speak on devotion we will be here forever. Sometimes I'm not sure what tomorrow will bring. All I'm sure of is that there's two people in this beautiful garden.  A couple things to note is that while these two people are in this magnificent garden, one of us is distracted and living in the future, while the other one is totally in this very moment soaking up every detail of the time together feeling content but still feeling like something is missing.

The wind is blowing, the sun is shining down so bright and I'm smiling, because it's a sweet smelling garden, and there's so much to see and do. Suddenly the sky becomes overcast and I'm filled with sadness, doubt, and fears of whether it will be a thunderstorm. When these storms take place will he run for cover in the same direction as me or will we argue about where to go?

The rain will come, we just don't know for sure when. Every time it has rained in the past we always argue about where to go and when we're done, that beautiful moment in the garden is lost and we find ourselves standing there, drenched, upset, realizing there's no need to run for cover anymore because we're defeated, purpose is lost. A couple of things happen next. A resentment starts to build on my end because had you not been so distracted you would've realized the overcast clouds and my sudden fears and doubts about whether this storm will ruin us, and therefore you would've already swooped in and saved the day. I tried to prevent being in this storm by checking the forecast but my efforts were futile. You realize your mistakes but only after this beautiful day in the garden is over. You wrap your arms around me and I melt like butter, the resentment fades away, the sun is peeking through the clouds, passion overtakes us and we can't stop ourselves.  We can't stay together but we can't part either, because next time we say we will bring an umbrella.



Who's responsibility is it to bring the umbrella? Who's responsibility is is to check the forecast? Who's responsibility is it to willingly submit to the others choices' and go along with them? The truth is, some of us would say the man should or the woman should, some would say let's split up these responsibilities equally, other's will dig a little deeper and find out that it's not as black and white as you would think....

A relationship is this Rose in a garden. The garden will keep thriving depending on the conditions and the rose will go through cycles of budding, blossoming, wilting, and ultimately dying. Whether or not you're the type to skip ahead to admire it's beauty and treat it tenderly only when it's blossomed, is the most important question. Some would watch it and give tender care to it from beginning all the way to the end without skipping forward because the entire process deserves devotion. All I know is that after the rose drops it's petals, its up to both people to start budding again. The petals shed are the layers of changes we undergo to create this beautiful and magnificent garden.

Love is not Possession, Love is Appreciation.

9 Reasons To Be or Not to Be... Vegetarian?

We've been following a vegetarian diet for various religious holidays throughout the year. Usually it's about two weeks max going vegan. The longest I've ever did a vegan diet was a month.  I contemplate whether I have it in me to give up meat forever. I've been okay so far, fully stocked with vegan items to cook like tofu burritos, and lentil soup, smoothies, fresh fruit, greek yogurt, granola, oatmeal, vegetable chow mein, vegetable curries, and roti. Of course my husband couldn't go a week without buying pizza so there's been that as well. I told myself I'd become a vegetarian one day before I hit 30. Time is approaching to finally make that leap. It's part of my goals. Religiously it's important to me, and sustainability matters to me as well. The only thing is I can't seem to give up is eggs. They're perfect sources of protein, essential parts to so many great recipes as well. Lamb and seafood are my favorites too. I actually had lamb two nights in a row. Recipe coming soon!

It's hard to decide what to eat though. I haven't become vegan yet, but we don't eat beef, pork sparingly, and do mostly lamb, chicken and turkey, among a few seafood options that aren't farm-raised. There's a revolution going on right now with the food industry and the time we're in is the age of information. Everything is coming to light about what we're consuming. Some people choose to ignore it and then there are people like myself who make an effort to find alternatives and boycott certain brands because we all vote with our dollars.



When I want change, I'm actually willing to change. Do I really want to make this leap though? I'm obsessed with making lists. It's how I  use logic to weigh important decisions.
 Let's explore this for a minute. 

My Reasons To become a Vegetarian:
  1. Religion.
  2. It's healthier. 
  3. Sustainability 
  4. I can get my protein from plant sources 
  5. I feel so much better when I'm doing vegan. 
  6. It would promote an alkaline diet optimal for preventative healthcare. 
  7. Animal cruelty: The documentary Food, Inc. really disturbs me. Even when I am eating meat, I do feel bad about it. It's hard to give it up no doubt, but it's something you have to work up to. 
  8. To become a stronger person and set an example for my family.  
  9. I'm really inspired by Kristina from FullyRaw.com, however I'd need to do a lot more research in order to fully endorse something like that. 
Reasons to NOT become Vegetarian:
  1. My husband loves meat! I'd still have to cook it, there goes extra work for me...
  2. Finding alternatives will be hard, despite the internet at my fingertips, everything I've looked into so far is made with a lot of crap. ex: GMO soy, corn, hydrogenated oils, corn syrup, etc.  
  3. Kids diet/nutritional development will be a job for me to think about and worry about. 
  4. Thanksgiving...my favorite holiday  =( 
  5. All my friends and family are meat eaters, there would be the lack of support. 
  6. Umm...Seafood? 
  7. I might end up eating a lot more junk. Does becoming a vegetarian literally make you healthier if you're substituting a lot of processed foods to feel satiated?
  8. Part of me knows I'll fail, my willpower is sometimes weak  and my impulsiveness gets the better of me. Also statistics show, majority of vegetarians go back to eating meat shortly (not sure if that intimidates me, since I fear failing at things...) 
  9. Giving up something that is a big part of me forever is too much pressure and a big commitment right now. I don't know if I'm ready.

Do Something or Do Nothing: 10 Ways to Invest in Yourself

Happy New Year Everyone!! Hope you all had a great holiday! This was my Christmas Break!

I had a million things on my to-do-list for the holidays and lately I have ADHD or something because I keep making drafts that I don't finish to publish. I haven't worked hard enough this past year on this blog but I won't beat myself up because last has been an amazing year for me. I'm growing, I'm changing, I had another birthday but I'll be forever young!

For two yrs now I have consistently been doing my exercise, eating healthy, getting my mind and body right. I feel the most productive and content when I'm doing me. 2014 was the year of me and what makes me happy and what I'd like to say most for people just getting started on themselves is this: Do Something or Do Nothing. Every time you don't do what you're supposed to do, you defeat yourself. You are your own biggest nightmare.



10 Ways to Invest in Yourself Starting Right NOW: 


1. Eat Right. You want to look and feel differently? Eat a wholesome and nutritious diet. Stick to single ingredient foods. If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it. If you want that piece of cake, go ahead and eat it, and enjoy every bite, but don't go back for more. If you already had a meal recently go get some water! Hydrate!


2. Exercise.
It's just that simple. I used to hate exercise but now I actually look forward to it, I don't dread it anymore. I get 3-4 days in a week, and I love it, if I don't do it I feel like crap. Even if you don't get any time in to exercise, move faster, get yourself moving. Lift some heavy things in your home for a few reps every week, put on the music and dance!


3. Rest. Sleep or do things that make you feel restful. In the last two weeks I slept when I wanted to, I hung around my house doing absolutely nothing, took calming baths, and had a dates with myself, enjoying music, my own company, the wind, or my favorite thing; the night... 

4. Groom. Be your best self. Pamper yourself. You don't need a lot of money to do this. Scrub your skin, do your nails, wax, pluck, shave, get a haircut, get yourself together daily and consistently. We take great care of our most prized possessions why shouldn't you be the most important thing? 

5. Say NO.  Feeling exhausted and need a time out? Say no to anything or everything asking more of you. Making time for your family and friends is important but sometimes it's equally important to say no. The time you spend doing things that drain you or serve no purpose is the time you could've spent doing one of the important things listed above. Say it outloud: "I will no longer over extend myself if I don't want to." 

6. Say YES. Say yes after you've said no. If it feels good do it. Today's society breeds two types of people. The overindulge-rs and the delayers. There are those who need to say NO more often to things they overindulge in and then there are those waiting. Waiting to start their life, waiting for more money, waiting for the "right" time. Delayed gratification is the most important part of success, however delayed gratification can hurt you too. Too much of anything is not good, so do the things you enjoy, because it's part of loving yourself. Hobbies are just as important as chores.

7. Expression. Be creative, imaginative, be the unique person you are, there's no one like you. Wear the clothes that represent your best you. Fuck comfort. As the saying goes; "comfort is a beautiful place but nothing grows there". Be bold, be excited. Let yourself be drawn to things you've never felt before.

8. MUSIC. I can't stress music enough.Music is therapy, music is life, music is a universal language that helps the process of having and maintaining positive thoughts. 9. Seek Growth. Become so self-aware that you're able to identify what makes you happiest, when you're being unrealistic, when you're complaining too much, who isn't genuine, and when to re-evaluate the direction you're headed in. The first thing people will ask is how? When you go on a journey looking for growth that's where you'll develop strength, learn life lessons, and build determination that will get you through the tough things in life. Read as much as you can, focus your goals on experiences rather than material possessions. Focus your ambitions on fulfillment. Satisfaction is guaranteed there.

10. Love. If you're in a relationship, be present, be passionate. If you're working on your career, it needs to be fulfilling. If you're with your family or friends, it needs to be a mutually understanding, supportive, uplifting relationship. Give love in all the areas of your life. Happiness is waking up everyday loving who we are, what we're doing and who we're with.
